This document is the official User Guide for RAVE
(Reconstruction in an Abstract Vertices Environment).
This is version $Rev: 475 $.

<preface><title>Foreword</title>
<para>
RAVE (Reconstruction in an Abstract Vertices Environment) has its roots in the
CMS vertexing community. At the time of this writing, full source code
compatibility has been maintained between RAVE and the CMS vertexing
algorithms. This enables the community to use CMS vertexing algorithms in RAVE
and vice versa, without any code change at all.
RAVE is intended as a vertex reconstruction framework, easily embedabble in
various software environments. The first target experiments are the ILC
detectors.

<chapter><title>How to use rave</title>
<para>
This chapter will go through the (simple) process of installing the software.
A sample use case is then given. Finally, an overview over the methods and how to
configure them is presented.
</para>
<sect1><title>Installation</title>
<para>
The tool used to build Rave, is <ulink url="http://www.scons.org">scons</ulink>.
The rave build environment creates a
<ulink url="http://pkgconfig.freedesktop.org/wiki/">pkg-config</ulink> ".pc" file.
All information about how to compile and link against Rave is
contained in this file.
Use: </para>
<para><command>pkg-config Rave --libs --cflags</command></para>
<para>
to find out about
all necessary compiler / linker flags.
Note that pkg-config uses the environment variable
<envar>PKG_CONFIG_PATH</envar>
to find pc files in non-standard directories.
</para>
<para>
Though we put some effort into keeping dependecies low, some are still to be
listed here. To successfully build the library on your system you need the
<ulink url="http://www.boost.org">boost</ulink> libraries
and a recent version of the
<ulink url="http://proj-clhep.web.cern.ch/proj-clhep/">CLHEP</ulink> libraries installed.
If they are located in some other path than /usr, one has to tell scons by using the
<command>boostdir=/usr/local/foo</command> and
<command>clhepdir=/usr/local/foo</command> command line parameters.
</para>
<para>
Use <command>scons --help</command> to obtained more detailed information about compile options.
</para>
</sect1>
<sect1><title>Usage</title>
<para>
This chapter shows how to use the rave library from within a C++ application.
</para>
<para>
Sample code:
<programlisting>
/* create factory with your own implementation of MagneticField,
* and Propagator. Default reconstruction method is "method",
* verbosity level is "verbosity".
*/
<code>
rave::Factory factory ( MyMagneticField(), MyPropagator(), method, verbosity );
</code>
/* from "tracks" ( std::vector < rave::Track > ) create "vertices",
* using the method defined in the constructor of the factory.
*/
<code>
std::vector < rave::Vertex > vertices = factory.create( tracks );
</code>
/** from "tracks" create "vertices", using the "mvf" method,
* setting sigmacut to 8.0 (and using default values for the other parameters)
*/
<code>
std::vector < rave::Vertex > other_vertices = factory.create ( tracks, "mvf-sigmacut:8.0" );
</code>
</programlisting>
